KPLUG Installfests are regular bi-monthly events where those members experienced with Linux installation get together with less experienced new users and help them install Linux on their own computers. Everyone learns and has fun doing it.

Installfests are fun for all.

  • If you're new to Linux, and not sure whether you want to attempt an install, come and watch.
  • If you aren't sure what this thing called "Linux" is, come and observe, you're sure to learn something.
  • If you have recently installed Linux, but still have questions, come join us.
  • If you've installed Linux a hundred times, come and help out!
  • If you want to install Linux, either as a solitary OS, or in a dual boot system, the Installfest is especially for you!
  • If you want to keep you current proprietary operating system and run Linux as a guest operating system on a virtual machine, we can help you with that as well.

Installfests at San Diego Technical Bookstore

Our first monthly installfest is held at San Diego Technical Bookstore in Kearny Mesa. It is usually from 10 am until 4 pm on the first Saturday of the month. Check http://www.thattechnicalbookstore.com for the address and driving directions. Check http://www.kernel-panic.org to confirm the date and time.

Installfests at the National City Adult School

Our second monthly installfest is held at the National City Adult School (NCAS). See yahoo maps for the location.

To enable us to use the facilities, our Installfests are classified by the school as a Linux "class". The National City Adult School also offers classes for A+, N+ and Cisco Certification. The Linux class enables the school to receive more adult education funding from the State of California, and KPLUG gets to use a facility particularly well suited for our Installfests.

Every attendee at our Installfest is a "student" in the class. In order to be a student you must fill out a class registration form and you must give your Social Security number. This is a requirement of the State of California. National City Adult School's funding is determined by the numbers of "students" and hours of "class". They receive funding from the State of California and we have a very nice facility to use for our Installfests. It's a win-win situation. We hope you think so, too.

From time to time, you may receive a survey, in the form of a letter or postcard asking questions about the "class" at National City Adult School. Please promptly respond. Your cooperation will ensure that we continue to be able to use this fine facility in the future.

The NCAS installfest is usually held on the Saturday following the KPLUG general meeting (which is usually the second Thursday of the month).

See Installfest/Checklist for a list of items you might want to bring. Note that NCAS provides us with keyboards, monitors, mice, and ethernet networking. So, those items are optional for the NCAS installfests.

See our main page at http://www.kernel-panic.org for the most current information regarding meeting times.
