kmag

Handy utility that some people may not even know esists

  • comes from package kdeaccessibility
  • KDE: Applications > Accessibility
  • GNOME, just create a launcher for /usr/bin/kmag
  • F2 switches from mouse-mode to selector-window mode
  • check out Save Snapshot As.., and Print to PDF

Gimp's Perspective tool

Really neat tool for correcting perspective distortion

  • Note: must mouse-click on image (shows grid)
  • Tool Options: set preview image + grid, (say) 15 grid lines
    • AND Backward (corrective)
    • clipping probably yes .. but experiment
  • drag corners of grid inside image -- will crop
  • don't forget to work on a copy of the layer
  • remember Gimp online & context help

Wireshark's Flow Graph

Net wizards know this tool .. but look at this neat diagram

(the program formerly known as ethereal)

  • Prep Hint: try Statistics > Conversations, [choose something]?, right-click, apply as filter
  • Then use Statistics > Flow Graph, Displayed packets
  • Note Save As saves a text file (not quite as pretty as gui)
  • Consider using kmag to capture & save a snapshot
  • Also remember the ability to right click on any packet and choose Follow TCP Stream to see nice payload display.
