Just realized that kvm-ok is likely an Ubuntu-ism... Sorry about that.
You'll definitely see whether KVM is enabled or not by looking at the
kernel's output via dmesg.
I just recently converted a VMware Windows XP guest (itself p2v'd from a
desktop a couple years ago) for use in KVM on my Ubuntu 9.10 system, and had
to go through a bunch of this the hard way, including finding the downloads
for the Windows virtio network and storage drivers and how to install them.

I haven't yet tried to install Windows XP from scratch into a KVM guest.
