Directly playing mp3's from CD

A regular data cd with mp3 files on it should work.  Some players  
(especially older ones) may have restrictions on file hierarchy.  ID3  
support still isn't in all players, and good song navigation has been  
an issue.  Also, many players do not support fast forward and rewind  
through mp3 songs.

I would recommend burning a mp3 cd and bringing it into the store to  
try out various players on display.

As for tools to use, you can use anything that can make data CDs.   
mkisofs + cdrecord, or k3b, for example.
