Fixed. It was a slightly flawed compile issue. Samba was re-compiled and 
re-installed, fixing the performance problem.

All the other issues remain open. I've forwarded the responses I received to the 
admin and we'll see what we can come up with.

FWIW, we're using version 3.0.13.
