I guess it depends on how new an Adaptec host adapter you have.
Just looked at the AHA-2940U2W and followed the menu:
Configure/View Host Adapter Settings ->
SCSI Device Configuration -> <--here choose per device
. . . <--several other options
Send Start Unit Command
Include in BIOS Scan <--this is what I was thinking of
The older AHA-2940 does not have this.
Device Configuration options ends with
Send Start Unit Command
In any case, this is not your problem if your controller is not
seeing the devices at all in the SCSI Disk Utilities menu.
