You can also do:

XFree86 -configure 
as root.  This will make /root/XF86Config.new.  Then run:
XFree86 -xf86config /root/XF86Config.new
If X loads, you're in.  Take the screen settings and put them in your distros
standard XF86Config file.  Avoid using the full /root/XF86Config.new file,
although it will work fine.
