Well, after you write the disk, a *rewrite* is required to write to the
disk again. Rewrite speeds are different (read slower) than write speeds.
However, if the drive is capable and just suddenly changed, it is likely
that your media is the issue. There are at least two different types of
CDROM media which can be written to. IIRC, one is older and limited to 4x
and below. Also, there are different grades of media which affect speed
of rewrite and reliability.
It's a real pain. :( I probably wind up spending far more on media than I
should simply to make sure that I get a good disk.
