volunteer opportunities

I'm fairly new to San Diego, and am looking for some volunteer opportunities 
in that would put my programming, and Linux experience to use.  Do you have 
any suggestions?  The ideal situation would be working with people in an 
educational atmosphere, but programming and grant writting projects are also 
acceptable.

I am looking for local projects to help kick start the job search and to 
develop some contacts down here.
