I can only assume you are trying this with a running VM, which you can't
do. The VM has to be "powered off" for you to be able to add devices via
the configuration editor. Only then can you connect/disconnect a device
while the VM is running.

BTW: Are you aware of the VMware newsgroups? Try connecting to
news.vmware.com and you will find a whole bunch of different
VMware-related groups. There are probably a few of us here on the
kplug-list using VMware, but there are probably a whole lot more people
over there that know more than we do....
