Why adding memory made GNOME unstable?

This Pentium 3 533 Mhz had 2 64Mb bars for years (128 Mb total)....

I tried to add a PC133 256Mb bar just now and got problems....

BIOS saw all memory since the memory check at boot up
ran thru some number of Mbs that 390Mb-ish....

However, rest of RedHat loaded fine until GNOME....

After logging into gdm it would tell me the panel
crashed. It would also take forever for GNOME to load
and configure after I typed in my login and password.
It would take forever on the "loading GNOME Audio" part.

When I removed the new memory bar all was fine.

Why would adding new memory mess up GNOME panel and
in general mess up GNOME???

Chris
