This was discussed a week or so on our list. Thought I'd forward it for
those who are interested in an advanced method to stop spam. You have to
be running postfix for it to work, afaik.

Subject: Update: Postfix 1.2 and Address verification
X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4ME+ PL82 (25)]

I have updated yesterday's alpha sender address verification code.

1) To avoid false negatives, probes now use the sender address
<postmaster@$myorigin> instead of the <> null address.

2) Updated documentation in the light of yesterday's discussions.

The updated version is postfix-1.1.11-trace-20021121; files are in
ftp://ftp.porcupine.org/mirrors/postfix-release/experimental/ and
mirrors. For an important disclaimer, see below the signature.

Once I return from Europe I will turn the last 20021115 snapshot
into the stable Postfix 1.2 release. This may involve removal of
some features that aren't ready.

The new code will then become the regular snapshot release. This
includes the new code for sender address verification, new code
for "sendmail -bv" (run an address through the entire address
rewriting and routing machinery), improved "sendmail -v" (mail a
delivery report to the originator), as well as improved bounce
reports that now also show the original recipient address.

Disclaimer for the postfix-1.1.11-trace-20021121 release follows:

WARNING WARNING WARNING WARNING WARNING WARNING WARNING WARNING
===============================================================
This is not your regular Postfix snapshot. There is a lot of new
code for address verification that is only lightly documented and
that has been tested only lightly. The address verification code
is proof-of-concept, and must not be used on high-volume sites.
Use at your own risk.
