strange USB mouse behavior...

I'm tinkering and asking for trouble perhaps
but still wondering what is wrong here.....
(i.e. this email is more for learning and not
life and death serious)
There are about 6 modules I need to modprobe
before I can do "gpm -t ps2 -m /dev/input/mouse0"
and see my USB mouse work properly and appear
to Linux as a PS2 mouse.....
Anyways...
If I add the modprobe and gpm lines in my rc.local,
it does not work. The modules get loaded but
the gpm line gets an *error* about device not being present
I believe.
It gets better....
What is the most strange however is that if I wait
until Linux boots up and *then* do the gpm line
it works!!!!
There is some subtle difference in the OS between
the last line of rc.local and the second after boot up.
This difference makes it to accept the gpm command above in one
situation but not the other.
Does anyone have any idea why this behavior?
Chris
