gpm has no USB support! Try "gpm -t help" to see for yourself.

Assuming your USB modules are loaded, you'll want to point X11 or GPM at 
/dev/input/mice.

The following USB modules should be loaded:
usbcore
usb-[u|o]hci
input
mousedev
hid
