Keeping ssh open

I ssh into my home system from work for email and frolic. Sometimes when I get dragged away to do
actual work (have they no shame?!), I come back to find that my ssh connection has been dropped. Is
there a way to keep it open? Maybe a configuration option or a cron job that pings over it?
