That's something about the Japanese people... they wouldn't just drop
their spears, thinking "This is foolish". Culturally, they're very
different from us. We have a "warrior tradition" that goes back a
couple of hundred years. The Japanese have a warrior tradition that
goes back *thousands* of years. A professional soldier was one of the
highest levels of society. Values that were inculcated in them from
birth included a sense of honor that told them that falling under the
power of an enemy was about the most unimaginable thing ever. Far, far
better to fight as long as possible, and die, than to become a
prisoner. I believe they would have used spears, rocks, their fists,
whatever; for as long as they possibly could, resisting an invasion of
their homeland.
