Maveric,

If you are using alsa sound system drivers for your sound card, you will 
need to unmute the sound card after the modules load. This sounds like 
it may actually be your problem.  Something like 'amixer set PCM 100 
unmute' is supposed to work, then you can use 'alsamixer' to fine tune 
the settings.  Check out the "Alsa-sound" mini-howto, in particular 
section 7.3 (on my system: 
/usr/share/doc/HOWTO/HTML/en/mini/Alsa-sound,html)
