X11 application automation

Does anyone know if there are "macro recorders" that will allow X11
apps to be automated?

What I'd like to be able to do is create a script that will launch an
X11 application and automatically send the X11 app key and mouse
events, and if error or warning dialogs come up, be able to write
exception handlers that will deal with them.  Basically, I want
something like Expect, but something that allows automated interaction
for X11 apps, as opposed to TTY apps.

Anyone know of such a package?
