bash prompt

[George Georgalis]

I've just reinstalled (did some partition resizing)
and everything seems to be working fine... accept my
bash prompt. I put a bell in it, but now the 'bell' 
character '\a' doesn't ring, just an \a gets printed
with my prompt.

PS1='\u@\h \W $ \a'
yields
gx at fait gx $ \a

the bell otherwise works (tab completion etc) 

I've tried both bash-1.14.7-23.6x and bash2-2.03-8

anyone know what's wrong?
