Main problem is that 802.11b is pretty-much line of sight. San Jose is
FLAT! San Diego isn't. I also doubt that they doing a 29 mile link and
still staying within FCC limits on radiated power (if you use a high-gain
antenna, you have to cut back on the transmitter output - there was a LONG
thread on the NANOG mailing list on this just this past week).
Now you could do what Hans-Werner Braun up at San Diego Supercomputer
Center has done - see http://hpwren.ucsd.edu/ - however I doubt it would
be cheap.
