Hard disk recovery

Thanks to all who responded to this thread.  I have successfully recovered 
what I needed.

It appears one of the keys was letting the drive cool off thoroughly.  When 
the drive was cool, the partition table was readable without errors.  I 
quickly dd'ed the desired partition to a file on a good drive where I was 
able to extract the needed files without any problem.
