Being new at this, previous unix experience years ago.

Is the username the full ELN/Full Email(djb7600 at earthlink.net?)

Is the type chap?

In regards to the dns settings, where do I get them?

Well David, as it happens I have kppp with earthlink as the dial up on
my laptop and I just spent some time at the installfest getting help to
get it to work.

So:

I have the following settings in
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ppp0 (actually this file may
actually get set when you configure KPPP):

DEVICE=ppp0
NAME= dialup name - for some reason with earthlink it is ELN/username
MODEMPORT=/dev/ttyS1
LINESPEEN=115200
PAPNAME= same as name
......
at the bottom:

DNS1=your first nameserver ip address
DNS2=your second nameserver ip address

Then - bringing up KPPP (you will need to log in as root:)
Connect to:  ELN/username
login id
password
and click on setup

edit the accnt - connection name, phone number (no commas, dashes etc,
if you need to dial 9 to get out then 9xxxxxxx;
Authentication:  CHAP
IP - Dynamic
DNS - enter your nameservers in the DNS Address List
Gateway - default

Under the Device Label -

Modem Device /dev/ttyS1
Flow Control - CRTSCTS
Line Termination CR/LF
Connection speed 115200

Now under Modem/Modem commands - I have seen this go the default way
(when KPPP came up there was a default initialization string and I also
found a 'How to' (kppp or pcmcia - not sure now) that had a different
initialization string - I think that is what I am using now:

AT S7=45 S0=0 L1V1X4&C1E1Q0

the rest I left unchanged.

Hope this helps,

Nicole
