it can get people like me interrested in looking at the stuff.
the point of sientific websites is usually to bring your research
to a broader public.

that public however does not have those tools installed.

vrml is a good idea.
unfortunately good ideas don't fly, only hyped ones.
however vrml was hyped at a time when the average computer 
was yet way to slow to handle a general-purpose 3d engine.

if vrml was hyped today, i am sure a lot of good stuff would 
come out of it...
