It took untill 1990's for the church to rescind their condemnation. Talk
about grudges!

Of course it was Charlemagne who suggested that we use the birth of
Jesus as a reference point rather than what had been used in the A.U.C. 
calendar, namely the starting  date of the city of "heathen Rome" as he
put it.  He was also known as Karl der Grosse , Charlie Magnus and Chuck
the Magger
