33% is surely more than just about everyone. I saw a stat on CNN
recently. Said the average American saves only 0.02% yearly.
That's about 80 bucks for a person making $40k.

I have the advantage of living outside of SoCal, so my rent is probably
a good 20% lower than the average down there (though still overpriced to
my mind) and more importantly, have a spouse who makes an above average
  salary.

Our savings rate will probably increase to over 50% in the coming few
months since we are going to buy a house, which will affect our cash
flow signifigantly.
Gotta build up the reserves while we can, it'll be 30 years before we
can save as much again. heh.
