If you are going to apologize, best to do it on list as well as off 
list.

If you make a public mistake, you should make a public apology.

I even adhere to this when managing people.  If I mistakenly cause 
public
discomfort to one of my direct reports, I make a *public* apology when 
it
becomes clear that I was wrong.  Avoiding the same public discomfort
which I mistakenly caused would be cowardly.

Lemme tell ya.  The negative reinforcement from just a couple of public
apologies makes one *quite* a bit more restrained.

If the moderator continues to be a jerk after you apologize, well, 
everyone
can draw their own conclusions.
