April 6, 2005 - New Web Site

Hi! Welcome to KPLUG, the San Diego Kernel Panic Linux Users' Group. We're in the process of setting up a new webserver, and integrating our Wiki. What you see here is the beginning, keep an eye out for futher updates and functionality!

April General Meeting

Date: April 14, 2005
Place:

San Diego County Office of Education
6401 Linda Vista Road
San Diego, CA 92111-7399

Room: 401 & 402
Time: 7:00 - 9:00 PM
Presenter: Carl Lowenstein
Topic: Using Qemu, an open-source hardware emulator

Qemu is a fast processor emulator using dynamic translation to achieve good speed. Running on x86 hardware, it can simulate a complete PC system including CPU, VGA card, mouse, keyboard, two IDE channels, floppy disk, network adapter, etc.

I have run the following in Qemu emulation: Knoppix of various kinds, Windows98SE, DamnSmall Linux, minimum freeBSD, freeDOS.

Qemu is really useful for checking out remastered Knoppix images without actually burning them to CD and rebooting the system.

Trying to install varieties of Windows that use BIOS calls that are not handled by the emulated BIOS is very frustrating.

Topic: Rapid Application Development of PostgreSQL C/S applications using Tcl/Tk

PostgreSQL is an enterprise level GPL SQL server database engine. Tcl/Tk ("Tool command language/ToolKit") is a powerful but simple cross-platform scripting language that makes it possible to develop powerful windowing applications for X, Microsoft, and Macs.

The presentation will show how to use available development tools and techniques developed at KPLUG and elsewhere to go from data design to finished application in a very short time, sometimes in one day of programming.
