While ldap is not an authentication mechanism, just as `` /etc/passwd'' isn't, you can store authentication information in ldap, similar to the way it is stored in ``/etc/passwd'' and ``/etc/shadow''. So I felt it was important to include an overview of ldap as part of this discussion.
