The computer, the Internet, & Web logs are changing the way people are getting the news. In the book, Dan Gillmor show that the beginning of the information age, bring new ways to be informed. No longer do you have to follow the M.S.M. News. In the introduction, Dan uses three moments in time to set the stage on the changing news media.
The first is the radio broadcast of the death of the president F.D.R. The second is TV broastcast of the shooting & death of president John F. Kennedy. The third is the September 11, attacks. While I do not have first hand knowledge of the first two, I know about the last one. With writing about these events Dan brings into focus the changing media, print the radio, radio to TV, TV to Internet.
In the chapter title “Newmakers turn the tables” I found out that Wil Wheaton aka “Wesley Crusher” is alive and doing well. Dan shows how Wil is using his blog to have new direction in life as a writer. Wil's Blog address is www.wilwheaton.net. At this time, Wil has published two books, “Just a geek & Dancing Barefoot”.
Through out the book Dan show how Weblogs or Blogs are being used to report the news. About the only type of blog not covered is the Milblogs. This book got me wanting to know about Blogging and so I got the book “Essential Blogging” By Cory Doctorow, Rael Dornfest, J.Scott Johnson, Shelley Powers, Benjamin Trott & Mena G. Trott. ISBN: 0-596-00388-9 from O'Reilly.
The book good points are , well writern, good examples, and a list of the web blogs talked about. The book week points are it did not cover the growing world of MillBlogs and the those blogs are show the world the real story of the war in the Iraq.
Maybe for the second edition he will cover the Milblogs as well.
If you want to find out a new way to get the news other then MSM, then this book is good reading and may get you writing you own Blog. I found it a very good read, I give it 7 out of 10 stars.
